Special Sessions - April 19, 2009 Morning

  • Teacher: Bernice Smith
    Date: Apr. 19, 2009 at 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
    Level: SIMPLE

Spring forward into the new season with Bernice as she teaches a variety of simple, yet delightful models to enhance your décor. She will lead you through two baskets, a chick, a bunny and a modular daisy. More will be taught as time permits.

  • Teacher: Paula Parris
    Date: Apr. 19, 2009 at 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
    Level: INTERMEDIATE

Everybody loves a handmade card; learn to make something that will be kept for many years to come. Rather than merely gluing a model to a card, Paula will teach you many techniques such as incorporating inserts, windows, locks, letterfolds and basic embellishments. Bring your imagination.

  • Teacher: Gay Merrill Gross
    Date: Apr. 19, 2009 at 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
    Level: INTERMEDIATE

Gay will teach her variations on a clever basket model. Bring along some small models and creative ideas to share for things to put inside your mini-baskets! Also bring a measuring tool (e.g., ruler) and a cutting tool (e.g., scissors, craft knife, small paper cutter, or envelopener) to class.

  • Teacher: Kay Eng
    Date: Apr. 19, 2009 at 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
    Level: INTERMEDIATE

Make a whole library of this wonderful book!  This eight page book is made from a 2 x 1 rectangle and has a great color-change for the cover. Kay will bring special paper so that you can make your books speak volumes.

  • Teacher: Tony Cheng
    Date: Apr. 19, 2009 at 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
    Level: HIGH INTERMEDIATE

Get out those crisp dollar bills! First up are a $Peacock and $Peahen designed by Gay Merrill Gross. You’ll be strutting proud with these lovely birds that feature a fan tail. Then zoom off in Tony’s $Car. Folded out of a hundred dollar bill (play money of course), the design has headlights, license plates and rear windshield wipers.

Special Sessions - April 19, 2009 Afternoon

  • Teacher: Larry Davis
    Date: Apr. 19, 2009 at 2:30 PM - 5:00 PM
    Level: NOT RATED

Cat’s Cradle is always played by two people. Each person picks up the loops of string in different ways and transfers the strings to his own hands forming a new design each time. String figures are more challenging and fun and involve only one person. This workshop will teach some of the most popular string figures including Cup and Saucer, Witch’s Broom, Jacob’s Ladder, Yam, Thief and others as time permits. (Not exactly origami, but the string is folded and it’s fun!)

  • Teacher: MaryAnn Scheblein-Dawson
    Date: Apr. 19, 2009 at 2:30 PM - 5:00 PM
    Level: LOW INTERMEDIATE

Artist Trading Cards (aka ATC’s) are miniature works of art that are 2.5” x 3.5” in size. Make them and trade them with other ATC artists, either in person or via snail mail. This class will teach the basics of ATC’s and give lots of ideas for using origami with them. You’ll make ATC’s and actually trade with the others in this class. You’ll be prepared to get ready for the Annual ATC swap at the June convention! A $2 materials fee will be collected in class.

  • Teacher: Deanna Kwan
    Date: Apr. 19, 2009 at 2:30 PM - 5:00 PM
    Level: INTERMEDIATE

An icosadedron is a regular polyhedron with 20 faces. Imagine a spiky version of this and you have a stellated icosahedron!  Deanna will teach two versions of Sonobe-type units and students can choose which unit they wish to fold to make the shape. She will teach assembling the 30-piece model with a color pattern—5 colors, 6 each. There should be time to learn the other units to make more at home.

  • Teacher: Bill Reyes
    Date: Apr. 19, 2009 at 2:30 PM - 5:00 PM
    Level: HIGH INTERMEDIATE

Here’s a class to make you shine! Join Bill as he shows you how to make a constellation of his original stars from pentagons. These beauties are 3D and incorporate multiple sinks, giving the models additional dimensionality. Accurate and precise folds are needed for the pre-creasing and collapsing of the stars.

  • Teacher: Eric Gjerde
    Date: Apr. 19, 2009 at 2:30 PM - 5:00 PM
    Level: HIGH INTERMEDIATE

Eric will teach some of his favorite tessellations from his recent book. Tessellations are pleated from a single sheet of paper and create wonderful geometric repeating designs. There is a lot of pre-creasing and some tricky moves, but once you get the hang of it, things fall into place nicely. Give it a try!
